JCJC Maroon Typhoon Schedules 35th Annual Exhibition | Schools

The 2012 edition of the Jones County Junior College Maroon Typhoon marching band will hold its 35th annual exhibition August 28, at 7 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. The exhibition provides a sneak preview of the 2012 pre-game and halftime shows. The public is invited to this free event which showcases the nearly 200 band members and the staff.

“As a student coming from the small town of Seminary, I was surprised at how many people came to see us,”  said Pickering, a 1996-97 Maroon Typhoon member and JCJC Director of Bands, about his first Maroon Typhoon exhibition as a student. “I can still remember how amazing it felt to have more than two thousand people come to cheer for the band.”

Continuing a two decade year old tradition, the band will open the pre-game show with “2001: A Space Odyssey” fanfare. The Touch of Gold dance team will be featured on Maroon 5’s smash hit, “Moves Like Jagger” with “America the Beautiful and “The Star Spangled Banner” completing the pre-game show.

The inspiration for this year’s halftime show, “Champions” focuses on championship Bobcat athletics and America’s love of competitive sports.  John Tesh’s rousing “Roundball Rock,” will open the half-time show followed by the familiar baseball standard, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”  A medley of tunes including “JCJC Alma Mater,” “Mr. Touchdown USA” and university fight songs “Notre Dame Victory March,” “On Wisconsin” and “Boomer Sooner,” highlights American’s love of football. Tying it all together, the finale features the timeless Queen classic,“We Are the Champions.”

“We will give glimpses of this year’s show at the exhibition, so we won’t give away everything,” said Pickering. “To get the full experience and see the entire show, we encourage everyone to plan on coming to the Bobcat football games.”

The Maroon Typhoon Exhibition began under the leadership of JCJC director of bands George Arnold in 1977 and continued under David Young, Sammy Barr and now Matthew Pickering.
