Master Sgt. Marchant retires

After moving up in the Non-Commissioned Officer ranks, one of Camp Shelby’s own has decided to hang up his uniform and retire from the Guard.

Master Sgt. Randell Marchant, a resident of Winona, is retiring from the Mississippi Army National Guard. He worked in the Plans and Service section of Directorate of Public Works and held the position of senior technical sergeant. Since Camp Shelby became a mobilization station in June 2004, Marchant has been a faithful member of DPW.

As springtime arrives across Mississippi, azaleas are starting to put on their colorful show. While these walls of pink and clusters of red and spots of white are well-known and anticipated, a spring-blooming shrub that does not get as much attention is the Indian hawthorn.

Four killed in wreck near Camp Shelby

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM)- Four people were killed Sunday morning on Hwy 49 North near the North Gate of Camp Shelby. 

The Forrest County Deputy Coroner, Jonathan Nobles, reports that the one-vehicle accident happened just before 6 a.m. when the passengers' Nissan Maxima left the road and hit a tree head-on. 

The driver, Ritha McCullum, 46, as well as Schamus McCullum, Kenneth Laster, 51, and Kia Sims were pronounced dead at the scene. The only survivor, a female, was transported to Forrest General Hospital.

The film “Red Tails” opened in the U.S. on Jan. 20. It is about the World War II Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the U.S. armed forces. Executive
producer George Lucas primarily funded the film. It is directed by Anthony Hemmingway and features the talents of actors Cuba Gooding, Jr., Gerald Mc-Raney and David Oyelowo.

Soldier worked as special agent

Sgt. 1st Class James Watts currently works for the Directorate of Plans Training, Mobilization and Security. His job is to maintain the contingency operation locations on Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center where Soldiers live and train.

“I enjoy my job. I work with great people and that makes my job a lot easier,” he said. Watts, a native of Columbia, is a member of the 890th Engineer Battalion Headquarters Company located in Gulfport.
